When Nicolas Halford’s seventh birthday was coming up, the little boy thought hard about what he wanted. He didn’t want toys, books, video games or other things children typically ask for when their big day comes. He wanted money, so that he could donate it to help less fortunate kids in his community. Clifford Grant is a vibrant man who loves a fun pair of socks. At the Rotary Club of White Rock’s 60th Anniversary celebration in May, Clifford came up with the idea to donate $50 to the Sources South Surrey/White Rock Food Bank Resource Centre for every pair of feet donning unboring (not plain, black) socks.
The Rotary Club of White Rock presented Sources CEO David Young a cheque for $25,000 on June 9, fulfilling their two-year commitment to contribute $50,000 towards the purchase and installation of an elevator at the Sources South Surrey/White Rock Food Bank Resource Centre (food bank).
The much needed elevator has been in operation just over a year. Prior to having the lift, volunteers had to take a long and steep set of stairs to access the second level of the building where the bulk of food donations is stored.
“Carrying items upstairs was a real issue for anyone with slight mobility issues,” said food bank manager Jaye Murray. “The majority of our volunteers are retired and constantly using the stairs can be tiresome.
“The elevator has made a huge difference.”
The food bank has been serving the South Surrey and White Rock community for 33 years. More than 600 people visit each week for food, clothing and to navigate other community support services. The building where it’s currently located was acquired in 2013 and renovations are ongoing.
“There is still some work to do around the Food Bank,” Jaye said. That includes building an office counter, creating more safe storage spaces on both levels and opening access to the whole of the second level. But for now, the elevator is an invaluable help to the volunteers and a great addition to the food bank.
Thank you to the Rotary Club of White Rock for their generous donation to the food bank’s capital campaign, and for contributing to the safety of our volunteers and the social wellness of our community.
One of the hardest and bravest things a person can do is to seek help when they need it. This is even truer when those hurting them are the people they are closest to—their family.
