On July 1, 2017, people across the country celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday. This day also marked the end of the Great Canadian Giving Challenge, and with that, the announcing of the Challenge’s winner. For most of us, getting to and from medical appointments is not an issue: we drive ourselves, arrange for a friend or family member to take us, take public transit, hire a taxi or walk. However, these options are often not that simple for seniors. To address this, Sources Community Resources Society (SOURCES) launched its Volunteer Wheels Program in 2009. Carried out by volunteers, White Rock/South Surrey seniors have an affordable, accessible and reliable means to get to their healthcare appointments – anywhere in the Lower Mainland.

Imagine this: waking up one day, and being unable to carry out everyday tasks such as cleaning your home, taking out the garbage, and even preparing your own meals. Now imagine this: this is the reality for more than half of Canada’s senior population due to a higher prevalence of long-term conditions and/or health problems (source). Or maybe you don’t even have to imagine this – this is just something you encounter (regardless of age and/or health) due to loaded schedules, deadlines that need to be met, or just the circumstances life hands your way.
