Cascades Casino helps Langley Food Bank

Food bank users won’t have to worry about receiving a nutrient-packed, protein-rich selection at the Sources Langley Food Bank in the near future thanks to a donation from Cascades Casino, through its corporate giving program GatewayGIVES.

Sources Director of Community Services Denise Darrell, Food Bank Manager Jaye Murray and Langley Food Bank Operations Manager Bruce Strom were on hand at the food bank on August 27 to receive a $2,500 cheque from Cascades Casino General Manager Raymond MacNeil and Assistant General Manager Robert Case.

“We’ve only been in operation for ten months but we’re seeing incredible support from the Langley community,” Strom said. “We already serve 100 people in an hour and we distribute for five hours once a week. We expect to serve double the number of clients we are serving now by the end of the year.”

“We anticipate a huge demand for proteins and healthy snacks for school lunches as children head back to school, and the Langley Food Bank is struggling to provide this,” Darrell added. “Eating enough protein is essential to good health and a challenge for the most vulnerable in our community. This generous donation from GatewayGIVES is incredibly timely and we are thankful to them for supporting our food bank and the work we do in the community.”

Protein-rich foods such as meats, fish and beans are on the more expensive end of groceries and are less frequently donated. They also run out the quickest on distribution day. After this week, there isn’t enough to hand out to the 450 clients expected next week. Cascades Casino’s contribution will allow Sources Langley Food Bank to sustain our supply of canned protein products in the colder, tougher months, and allow us to continue providing healthy, nutritious meals for vulnerable people in the Langley community.

“GatewayGIVES is our way to give back and support the communities where we operate. We’re extremely proud to partner with like-minded organizations such as Sources that strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them,” said Tanya Gabara, Director of Public Relations at Gateway Casinos & Entertainment.

Due to limited storage room, monetary donations are preferred over donations of food. Thanks to partnerships with local food distributors, food banks have the purchasing power of $3 for every dollar.
